Chapter 2 Nationalism in India

Note :-
  • In this post, I will point out all the important paintings and pictures given in the NCERT history book from Chapter 2.
  • This can be used for reference so that you can be aware on the major details each picture is trying to depict all together.
  • These will be asked only as identification questions.
  • I have highlighted some important keywords within the points to make you remember it easier.
  • The Page numbers given along side the pictures are with reference to the rationalized content from 2023-24.
  • This will be updated yearly based on the rationalization
  • This post only has pictures which are more likely to come or came earlier during the board examinations.

PICTURE 1 (Pg 30):-

  • This picture shows Indian workers in South Africa march through Volksrust on 6 November 1913. 
  • Mahatma Gandhi was leading the workers from Newcastle to Transvaal in South Africa.
  • When the marchers were stopped and Gandhiji arrested, thousands of more workers joined the satyagraha against racist laws that denied rights to non-whites.

PICTURE 2 (Pg 33):-


  • This picture shows us the boycott of foreign cloth in July 1922.
  • Foreign cloth was seen as the symbol of Western economic and cultural domination.

PICTURE 3 (Pg 37):-


  • At Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur, a peaceful demonstration in a bazaar turned into a violent clash with the police on 5th Feburary 1922.
  • Hearing of the incident, Mahatma Gandhi called a halt to the Non-Cooperation Movement because of the amount of violence that took place.

PICTURE 4 (Pg 38):-


  • This picture shows the Congress session at Allahabad in 1931.
  • Apart from Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is in the extreme left, Jawaharlal Nehru is in the extreme right and Subhas Chandra Bose is fifth from right.

PICTURE 5 (Pg 40):-

  • This shows Gandhi and his 78 trusted volunteers during his famous 'Salt March' from Sabarmati, Gujarat to the coastal town of Dandi, Gujarat.
  • On his way, Gandhi was followed by 1000s of followers.


PICTURE 6 (Pg 40):-

  • This picture shows the police's response to the Civil Disobedience movement by punishing the Satyagrahis in 1930.

PICTURE 7 (Pg 43):-

  • This picture shows the participation of women in nationalist movements.
  • During the national movement, many women, for the first time in their lives, moved out of their homes on to a public arena. 
  • Amongst the marchers you can see many old women, and mothers with children in their arms. 
PICTURE 8 (Pg 46) :-
  • This print shows a picture of Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the early twentieth century.
  • In this print, Tilak is surrounded by symbols of unity.
  • Also, sacred institutions such as the Temple, Church, Masjid are shown in each corner of the print.
PICTURE 9 (Pg 47):-



  • This print shows the picture of 'Bharat Mata' (The allegory of India) painted by Abanindranath Tagore in 1905.
  • Bharat Mata here is shown as dispensing learning, food and clothing. 
  • The mala in one hand emphasizes her ascetic quality. 
  • Abanindranath Tagore, like Ravi Varma before him, tried to develop a style of painting that could be seen as truly Indian.
PICTURE 10 (Pg 47) :-

  • This print shows us Jawaharlal Nehru standing with an image of Bharat Mata and the map of India in his hand close to his heart.
  • In a lot of popular prints, nationalist leaders are shown offering their heads to Bharat Mata. 
  • The idea of sacrifice for the mother was powerful within popular imagination.
PICTURE 11 (Pg 48):-
  • This is another print depicting Bharat Mata
  • Here she is shown with a trishul, standing beside a lion and an elephant – both symbols of power and authority.
