Chapter 2 Nationalism in India

Note :- 

  • The  given dates are all the dates which are relevant to the topics given in the NCERT textbook.
  • You need not memorize all the dates given below. Instead just remember the dates which are more likely to be asked in your exams.
  • Those who wish to seek more knowledge can have a look into all the dates.
  • This post will be updates from time to time for a more updated experience.
  • Ultimately, all of these dates are for a reference & to be used as a time saver in helping you to refer before your exams.

    1.) EARLY INDIAN STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE:-

  • 1855 : Santhal Rebellion
  • 1857 Revolt   : 10 May 1857 – 8 Jul 1859
  • 1906 :  Swadeshi movement
  • 28 December 1855 : Indian National Congress was formed.
  • 1906 : All India Muslim League was formed to safeguard the rights of Muslims in India.

    2.) GANDHIJI'S IMPORTANT DATES :- 

  • 1893 - Gandhiji went to South Africa.
  • 1909 - Gandhiji wrote the book 'Hind Swaraj' where he mentioned his roadmap to a non cooperation movement.
  • 1913 - African march from Newcastle to Transvaal against apartheid in South Africa.
  • January 1915 - Gandhiji returned to India.
  • 1917 - Satyagraha in 1.) Champaran district (Bihar)  2.) Kheda district (Gujarat)
  • 1918 - Satyagraha in Ahmedabad (Gujarat).

    3.) IMPACTS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR :-

  • 1913 - 1918 : Prices of accommodities increased
  • 1918 - 19 and 1920 - 21 : Major crop failure leading to acute shortages of food
  • Census of 1921 : 12 to 13 million people died as a result of famine and epidemic

    4.) ROWLATT ACT :-

  • 1918 - First World war ends and the Ottoman Empire lost to the Allies     
  • 18 March 1919 - The Rowlatt Act was proposed which gave the British government the        right to imprison  political leaders without trial.
  • March 1919    - In Bombay,  A Khilafat Commitee was formed to defend the Khalifa's            temporal powers. 
  • 6 April 1919   - A hartal (strike) takes place all across India.
  • 10 April 1919 - Police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession, Martial law was              imposed and General Dyer took command of the army.
  • 13 April 1919 - Jallianwala Bagh incident took place at Amritsar (Punjab).
  • September 1920 - Calcutta session for Congress takes place where the need for a non-        cooperation movement is convinced to other leaders by Gandhiji.

     

    5.) NON - COOPERATION MOVEMENT    

  • 1859 - The Inland Emigration Act was implemented preventing plantation workers from      leaving the tea gardens without permission which was hardly given
  • 1882 - The Madras Forest Act of 1882 was implemented, preventing people from entering    forests.
  • June 1920 - Jawaharlal Nehru visited villages in Awadh.
  • October 1920 - Jawaharlal Nehru, Baba Ramachandra Rao and few others formed the 'Oudh Kisan Sabha'.
  • November 1920 - Over 300 branches of the 'Oudh Kisan Sabha' were established.
  • December 1920 - Nagpur session of Congress took place where the Non cooperation              movement was adopted.
  • January 1921 - Beginning of Non-cooperation movement.
  • 6 January 1921 - Police firing took place against peasants in Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh).
  • 1924 - Alluri Sitaram Raju was captured and executed.
  • 1928 - Vallabhbhai Patel led the peasant movement in Bardoli(Gujarat) against the                enhancement of land revenue, known as the Bardoli Satyagraha.
  • 4 February 1922 - At Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, police fired at a peaceful  demonstration.
  • February 1922 - Gandhi withdrew the Non - cooperation movement.

   6.) CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENT :- 

  • 1928 - The Simon Commission arrived in India.
  • October 1929 - Lord Irwin announced a vague offer.
  • December 1929 - Lahore session of congress take place which formalized the need for      'Complete Independence'. It was declared that 26 January 1930 will be                                celebrated as Independence day.
  • 31 January 1930 - Gandhiji sends a letter to Irwin with 11 demands to be fulfilled by 11        March 1930.
  • 12 March 1930 - Gandhi begins his famous Salt March from Sabarmati, Gujarat to Dandi,  Gujarat.
  • 6 April 1930 - Gandhi reaches Dandi and breaks the Salt law and the Civil Disobedience      movement begins.
  • April 1930 - Abdul Ghaffar Khan is arrested.
  • May 1930 - Mahatma Gandhi is arrested.
  • 5 March 1931 - Gandhiji and Lord Irwin enter in a pact known as Gandhi-Irwin Pact.
  • 7 September 1931 to 1 December 1931 - The Second Round table Conference take place.
  • 1932 to 1934 - Gandhi relaunches the Civil Disobedience movement which loses momentum  by 1934.

7.) DIFFERENT STRANDS OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE  MOVEMENT :-

  • 1920 - Indian Industrial and Commercial Congress was formed.
  • 1927 - 1.) Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce was formed.
2.) Muhammed Ali Jinnah (one of the leaders of Muslim League was willing to give up the demand for seperate electorates if Muslims were assured reserved seats in  the central assembly.           

  • 1928 - M.R Jayakar of the Hindu Mahasabha opposed the above proposal by Muhammed  Ali Jinnah.
  • 1930 & 1932 - Strikes by Railway workers & Dockworkers respectively.
1930 - 1.) Chotanagpur tin mine workers wore Gandhi caps and protested.        

 2.) B. R. Ambedkar organized the Dalits into the Depressed classes Association.        

3.) Sir Muhammed Iqbal (president of Muslim League) gave a statement which caused the demand for Pakistan in the future.                    

  • 1932 - Poona Pact was signed between Ambedkar and Gandhiji.
